IOTA CHAIRMAN TO STEER RELAUNCH OF CLASS 1 Thursday, 6 May: IOTA’s newly appointed chairman, Mohammad Al Jaidah, has called for new rules which will enable fairer and less costly participation in the Class 1 Championship, with the aim of promoting the entry of new teams who can compete at the highest levels using a sustainable budget, a revision of the Class 1 rules to adapt raceboats and the racing format to new market requirements and the setting aside of any divisions and self-interest, as part of his plans for a relaunch of Class 1.

MARIT STROMOY JOINS WELMAX OFFSHORE RACING IN CLASS-1

MARIT STRØMØY IS THE NEW FIRST-LADY OF CLASS 1 Friday, 5 March: Norway’s Marit Strømøy will become the first woman to race in the Class 1 World Powerboat Championship for over a decade when she makes her debut at the Brazilian Grand Prix in Rio de Janeiro, 26-28 March.

2009 CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL RESULTS

The WPPA has issued the final points and classifications for the 2009 UIM-WPPA Class 1 World Powerboat Championship. Fazza’s Arif Al Zafeen and Nadir bin Hendi end the year as Class 1 World, Middle East and Edox Pole Position Champions. Victory 1’s Mohammad Al Mehairi and Jean-Marc Sanchez, the 2009 Class 1 European Champions, who tragically lost their lives in what was the last race of the season, were runners-up to their team-mates, with Kolbjorn Selmer and Jorn Tandberg in Welmax taking third place. FAZZA AND VICTORY 1 ONE-TWO SECURES NINTH CLASS 1 WORLD TITLE FOR VICTORY TEAM

Saturday, 21 November, ABU DHABI (U.A.E.): Fazza’s Arif Al Zafeen and Nadir Bin Hendi completed the hat-trick by winning race 2 of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, to add to their Pole Position and race wins yesterday. Their sixth win of the season came after a frenetic start which saw all boats except Maritimo handed a penalty long-lap for jumping the start. For the third race in succession Victory 1 had to settle for second place behind their team-mates, after a tight battle with Welmax who finished third.

Sunday, 4 October, STRESA (Italy): Victory 1’s Mohammad Al Mehairi, in his debut season in Class 1, and Jean-Marc Sanchez were crowned European Champions after finishing second in Race 2 of the Italian Grand Prix, round 4 of the UIM-WPPA Class 1 World Powerboat Championship.

MARITIMO 11 GETS PENALTY, MOVED TO 2....

Saturday, 3 October, STRESA (Italy): A post-race long-lap time penalty cost Maritimo their maiden Class 1 victory, handing the win to Victory 1 and with it the lead in the European and World Championship standings. An already enthralling Race 1 of the Italian Grand Prix, round 4 of the UIM-WPPA Class 1 World Powerboat Championship, saw championship leaders Fazza suffer engine problems on lap five and finish seventh.
